The pheromone capsules/dispensers release an active 'scent'. This scent mimics that released by a female moth occuring in nature and the male moth is persuaded to seek this false female moth.
Hence more time is spent by the male seeking and attempting to mate with the synthetic females, thus diluting the search for real female moths. Control is therefore effected by mating disruption.
Since mating is prevented, fertile egg laying and larval infestations are vastly reduced. This disruption to the natural process of mating effectively suppresses the insect pest population without killing off natural predators and parasites of the target pest.
